The hillside above Zărnești had been hay meadow for generations before we put anything on it. The brief we set ourselves was modest: one building, low enough not to interrupt the ridge line, warm enough for February, and quiet enough that the silence is the point.
It is built as a woodframe structure from spruce felled and milled within the county. The joinery and the terrace were all made locally. That was a slower and more expensive way to do it, and it is the reason the cabin looks like it belongs where it stands.
We keep it to two guests deliberately. A larger house would earn more and feel like somewhere else entirely.
The land
Why we built where we did
The plot sits on a shoulder of hillside with a natural rise about 30 metres above the cabin, and that rise was really the reason to build here at all. It looks straight down the valley with nothing else on it, so it became a private plateau kept for whoever is staying — a picnic table, open views, and no one else's terrace in the frame.
Everything else was arranged around that view: the cabin sits low enough that the plateau still reads as open ground rather than a garden, and the walk up to it is deliberately left as natural hillside path rather than paved.
Our approach
Light on the hillside
Water comes from our own spring in Măgura and is drinkable straight from the tap. Waste is separated and taken down the hill by us, not left for the commune.
The meadow around the cabin is still cut for hay just once a year, late in the summer. It is a working hillside, and we would like it to stay one rather than turn it into a landscaped garden.
How we host
Direct, and deliberately small
There is no booking platform call centre standing between you and us. Every message — before, during or after a stay — comes straight to us on WhatsApp, and we answer it ourselves.
That only really works because the cabin is small. One booking at a time means one set of guests gets our full attention, from the first question about dates to help finding the gravel turn-off in the dark.
It also means we are usually the ones who notice first if something on the hillside needs fixing, rather than a maintenance ticket working its way through a management company.
The hillside is quiet. Come and have it to yourselves.
